We have another early flight and an hours taxi ride to Kuala Lumpur Air Asia terminal at the airport where we check in and wait for our flight to Borneo. Unlike the main Kuala Lumpur airport, the low cost carrier terminal- only for Air Asia flights - is pretty basic. The flight is fine though and we land in Kota Kinabalu at midday. The usual customs procedures follow!
We have decided to rent a car while we are here and so we go straight to the two rental desks and start the tedious process of bargaining for the best deal. David eventually settles on one company, KK travel, and we are presented with what can only make Nelly the Nissan look like a glamourous and top of the range model! It is a Kancil - a beacon of Malaysian engineering - but it is a heap! It does however have air con and a sat nav and we load up and drive through Kota Kinabalu to find where we are staying for the next few days . Wendy is the cousin of a dear friend in England and now lives in KK with her Malay husband Vinodh and two boys (7 and 4) They are both doctors and live north of the city near to the hospital and university. As soon as we arrive Vinodh tells us we all have to leave the house until 8pm as there has been a reported case of dengue fever and the "men from the local authority" are coming to fog the area to deal with the mosquitos. He takes us to the Sutera Harbour club and we swim and have dinner before returning home later.
